Discovering God's Glory One Day at a Time

Catching a Catfish

Morning Thought: Don’t be seduced by Satan’s switcheroo schemes. Sin is like catching a catfish. You cast your line, desiring a great catch. You get a bite. Now you’re hooked! The promise of the pull exhilarates you, making you think you caught a big barramundi. But, when you reel it in, it’s a big fat ugly catfish. Sin seems promising, but in the end it wants to bite off your limbs. Your Father has something much better for you. “Each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows” (‭James‬ ‭1‬:‭14-17‬ NIV).

Get Dressed & Come

Morning Thought: God’s promises are not dropped into the lap of the lazy. Each promise requires your faith and perseverance to partake. The Father has prepared a feast for you, but you need to come to his table to eat. Today, hear his call, get dressed for the occasion and come to his banquet. You won’t be disappointed. “We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience [long suffering perseverance] inherit what has been promised” (‭Hebrews‬ ‭6‬:‭12‬ NIV).

The Humble Kingdom

Morning Thought: We live among the kingdoms of this world, kingdoms that will rise and fall. But we are citizens of a much greater Kingdom, a Kingdom that rises but never falls. It has unlimited resources and power. And yet, the mystery of this Kingdom is that it chooses to grow humbly. It doesn’t overwhelm, but subtly seeps in. It grows through our faithful presence, our acts of kindness and our invisible prayers. It advances through day by day integrity and love. Jesus taught, “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches” (‭Matthew‬ ‭13‬:‭31-32‬ NIV).

Are You Balanced?

Morning Thought: Make sure your giftings and character are well balanced. Your giftings and character are like two people on opposite sides of a seesaw. If your giftings heavily outweigh your character, the seesaw becomes like a catapult, spiralling you into the air for a bone breaking fall. But when your character and giftings are rightly balanced, there is joy and delight, both for yourself and others. “If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing…When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me” (‭1 Cor. 13‬:‭1-2, 11‬ NIV).

Heaven On Earth

Morning Thought: Christianity has often focused on getting people to heaven, but Jesus focuses on getting heaven to earth. Jesus’ goal is to get heaven inside us – God’s ways resonating in our soul. Today, remember it’s your call through Jesus to make heaven real on earth. “This, then, is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven'” (‭Matt. 6‬:‭9-10‬ NIV).

You Have Been Chosen

Morning Thought: Real leaders change the environment around them by the righteous lives they live. They leave a lasting legacy of moral revolution. These are the kinds of leaders God is raising up in our time. They transform his church and eventually the world around us. Guess what? God has chosen you. “See how the faithful city has become a prostitute! She once was full of justice; righteousness used to dwell in her— but now murderers…I will restore your leaders as in days of old, your rulers as at the beginning. Afterward you will be called the City of Righteousness, the Faithful City” (‭Isaiah‬ ‭1‬:‭21, 26‬ NIV).

Your Father is Good

Morning Thought: Your Father is not unjust. He rewards all who diligently seek and obey him. If his goodness is being stolen from you, fight for it through prayer. His blessings are your inheritance, promised by your Father. But sometimes we need to learn his ways before we experience the fullness of his will. “Blessed are all who fear the Lord, who walk in obedience to him. You will eat the fruit of your labor; blessings and prosperity will be yours. Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house; your children will be like olive shoots around your table. Yes, this will be the blessing for the man who fears the Lord” (‭Ps 128‬:‭1-4‬ NIV).
