Discovering God's Glory One Day at a Time

Month: December, 2014

Triumphs & Tradgedies

Morning Thought: Forget your triumphs and tragedies of the past and press on to God’s future. Don’t let yesterday be your source of strength or sorrow. The successes will trip you up and the failures will weigh you down. Only remember what your Father has done. Draw your strength from the ever-living God. Pursue the goal of knowing him and doing his will. “But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus” (‭Phil.‬ ‭3‬:‭13b-14‬ NIV).

He’s Relentless

Morning Thought: The Father is watching over your life to bring to pass everything he has promised you. He’s doing the same for his church and the world. He’s working far more relentlessly than you can imagine. Hang on to hope! “The word of the LORD came to me: ‘What do you see, Jeremiah?’ ‘I see the branch of an almond tree [Hebrew sounds like watch],’ I replied. The LORD said to me, “You have seen correctly, for I am watching to see that my word is fulfilled” (Jer. 1:11-12). “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: None of my words will be delayed any longer; whatever I say will be fulfilled, declares the Sovereign Lord” (Eze. 12:28).

Watch Out!

Morning Thought: Watch out for temptation. Christmas is not a time to get drunk, but to be filled with the Spirit. God didn’t step down from heaven to earth so that you could act like a fool. Resist pressure from family and friends these holidays and have the guts to shine the light of Jesus. “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light…Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” (‭Eph.‬ ‭5‬:‭8, 18-20‬).

Keep the Fire Burning

Morning Thought: You are the Father’s home and your life is like the temple’s lampstand. The Menorah (lampstand) had seven branches, reminding us that our light should not just shine for one day, but everyday of the week. The greatest evangelism does not happen on Sunday or Christmas, but each day in your home, workplace and neighborhood. Like the priests of old, keep the fire burning, tending your lampstand to shine in the world’s darkness. “Tend the lamps before the Lord from evening till morning, continually…The lamps on the pure gold lampstand before the Lord must be tended continually.” (‭Leviticus‬ ‭24‬:‭3-4‬ NIV)

An Angel with a Measuring Stick

Morning Thought: An angel came to the Lord with a measuring stick. He said, “I have measured your child and he is NOT growing.” The Lord responded, “Send him some trials.” Another angel came to the Lord regarding another person. He said, “I have measured your daughter and she IS growing.” The Lord responded, “Send her some trials.” What is the moral? Trials help you grow; they are like spiritual fertiliser. Trials also keep you on track when you are growing; they are God’s way of pruning a healthy plant. And since your Father has all wisdom, he knows the perfect time to stop the intensity. Have you thanked God in your trial? (My inspiration: Zechariah 2:1-2)

Who’s Your Support

Morning Thought: Some laugh when you are about to fall, but God reaches out his hand to support you. He wants you to walk secure, and he will give you all his attention and power so that you can do so. When you begin to slip, call on his name. “Help me, Jesus!” is a powerful prayer. “When I said, ‘My foot is slipping,’ your unfailing love, Lord, supported me” (‭Psalm‬ ‭94‬:‭18‬ NIV).

A Dangerous Prayer

Morning Thought: The recent flash storms in Brisbane remind us of creation’s power. Hail, floods, wind & lightening. My son & I were stuck in the middle of its fury. And yet, I’m also reminded that God is more powerful than the storm. More powerful than hail is God’s living voice that can speak to your soul today. “Lord, speak to me,” is a ‘dangerous’ prayer. “The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord thunders over the mighty waters. The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is majestic. The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars; the Lord breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon” (‭Ps 29‬:‭3-5‬). “Mightier than the thunder of the great waters, mightier than the breakers of the sea— the Lord on high is mighty” (‭Ps 93‬:‭4‬).
