Morning Thought: God is the God of life and the eighth letter of the Hebrew alphabet, ח Heth, reminds us of his life. Heth ח is a guttural letter: you pronounce it by clearing your throat. The very sound of Heth ח conveys that life is gritty, even harsh at times.
For us to know eternal life (חי, Chai), our Messiah went through the grinding travail of the cross. There is no such thing as true life without death. Yet, it’s through Yeshua’s death that we are saved from the ultimate pain of the second death—everlasting destruction.
Heth ח begins one of the most famous Hebrew words: Chaim (חיים). At celebrations, Jews often exclaim, “L’Chaim”, meaning ‘To Life’. Yes, life is gritty, but God’s grit—revealed through the Messiah taking up the cross—overcomes the troubles of this world.
When he is your portion (חלק, heleq), you have authentic life indeed—his eternal and overcoming life. Psalm 119:57 (Heth) begins saying, “My portion [חלקי] is Yahweh; I have promised to guard your word” (my translation).
