Zayin: The Rhythm of Rest

Morning Thought: I responded to God’s call to come to Australia in 1999. The King of Kings arranged Anna and I’s marriage, and by his grace, we started a family, planted a church and established a Bible School. It’s only as I cease from my work and celebrate God’s work that I remember correctly.

Zayin ז is the seventh letter of the Hebrew alphabet and teaches us to remember (zakar זכר). It reminds us of the rhythmic cycle of rest that God founded at creation on the seventh day. “Remember (zakor זכור) the sabbath day, to keep it holy” (Exo. 20:8).

Remembrance and rest is the key to authentic success. But why is it so hard for us to stop? And why do we think it’s our works that save us? When you let go and practice sabbath––in a new and living way––you are empowered to stand strong.

Remembering is all about entering into God’s rest, and that’s where real strength is found. Sabbath is both an ending and a beginning, a dying and a resurrection, a stopping and starting anew. It’s more than a day––it’s a way of life––and a prophetic picture of our King, Jesus, who can rest because he created all things and conquered the chaos.

The shape of Zayin ז reminds us of a sceptre, a sword and even the prongs of a crown. It’s royal to rest, and it’s the way of a warrior. So let’s slow down and remember God’s goodness this holiday season. Let’s even remind God of his promises like Psalm 119:49 (Zayin): “Remember (זכר) the word to your servant upon which you have made me hope” (my translation).

Born and raised on Long Island, New York, I migrated to Australia in 1999. That’s when I married my beautiful wife, Anna, and we planted our church and Bible School. We’re now the proud parents of four children, ranging in age from nine to twenty-two. We’re still pastoring the same beautiful church, Church on the Park, in the the heart of Brisbane, Australia (https://www.brisbanefire.com). We also continue to teach our awesome students at Holy Fire Ministry Training School (https://www.holyfireschool.com). I love to write and encourage God's people. And something that many people don't know, I'm a DJ as well (aka DJ SOL Vibes).
