Diminishing the Authority of God’s Word – Day 44
“God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light” (Gen. 1:3). Any light that does not proceed from God’s Word is no light at all. Any light that is proclaimed that does not emanate from what God speaks is equally a deception. God has eternally bound himself to his Word. He has also eternally married his Word to true light. True light can only flow from his Word. The Psalmist uncovered this when he said, “The unfolding of your words give light; it gives understanding to the simple” (Psalm 119:130).
I believe today that many have diminished the authority and reverence the Word of God deserves. Consequently, we have diminished Christ. We may have not diminished the Word in our doctrinal statements (in our creeds) but we have belittled it in our attitude and practice. Each of us must learn to approach the Word with greater fear and trembling.
What does John mean when he proclaims Jesus as “the Word of God”? He means that Jesus is the communication of God, the revelation of God. This is why Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). There is no way God can be known except he communicates himself to us. He can only be known by grace! Every other way and every other path bypasses grace. God can only be known by making himself known; he can only be known through his Word. And God has chosen to communicate himself to us through Jesus, the Living Word.
Prayer: Father, there is a temptation to know you apart from your Word. But all paths do not lead to you, only the path of your Word. May I reverence your Word and see that there is no light apart from it. May you unfold your words to me and give me understanding.
