Morning Thought: Let’s reflect some more on Paul’s opening greeting to the Colossians: “Grace to you and wholeness from God our Father” (Col. 1:2b, IT).
Wholeness is grace’s destination. It’s the Father’s mission to restore the soundness that was lost after man introduced chaos into the world. This completeness — the quelling of the chaos — is only possible through him. Yet, we often look to books, entertainment, people and professionals to give us what only our Creator can. Wholeness that has its origins in God rather than people’s ingenuity is grace’s goal and the purpose of Paul’s letter to the Colossians.
Grace and wholeness are the virtues that were slipping from the Colossians’ fingers because they were getting confused. All sorts of promising and persuasive teachings, religious ideas and philosophies were pushing them off-centre and disconnecting them from their head, the Messiah. The situation at Colossae reminds us of the current religious market of goods and services. Many of them offer hope but disconnect us from intimacy with Jesus. Colossians is all about restoring that lost connection. Paul writes to bring them back to the source of grace and wholeness.
