What is Grace? – Day 63

Many try to divorce God’s Word from the power and the grace of God. When we do this we will lack genuine fruit, fruit that lasts. The Word, the power and the grace of God are a three-strand cord that cannot be easily broken. If we do break them apart we do it at a great cost. Earlier we said that we can only grow by grace—but what exactly is the grace of God? The common definition—“unmerited favour”—paints some of the picture of grace but it doesn’t express the fullness of God’s grace. So what is the full picture?

God’s grace is his power to cause to be. Paul realized this when he said, “But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the grace of God which was in me” (1 Cor. 15:10). It was the grace of God that caused him to be who he was. And it was that power “to be” that empowered him to work. We put the cart before the horse when we try to achieve grace by our works because works flow out of grace.

This grace, as we will see in our next post, flows out of God’s dynamic Word and always carries with it God’s power. Grace is more like a lion than a ballerina.

Prayer: Father, let me know your true grace flowing through my veins. May I never divorce your grace from your Word and power. Make me into the man (or woman) you have called me to be. I can only be that by your grace.

Born and raised on Long Island, New York, I migrated to Australia in 1999. That’s when I married my beautiful wife, Anna, and we planted our church and Bible School. We’re now the proud parents of four children, ranging in age from eight to twenty-one. We’re still pastoring the same beautiful church, Church on the Park, in the the heart of Brisbane, Australia (https://www.brisbanefire.com). We also continue to teach our awesome students at Holy Fire Ministry Training School (https://www.holyfireschool.com). I love to write and encourage God's people. And something that many people don't know, I'm a DJ as well (aka DJ SOL Vibes).
